Baltic States [DNE 511]

The course is designed as an introduction to the culture, history and politics of the Baltic

states. It explains similarities and differences among the countries based on their

linguistic-cultural heritage, the experience of the pre-WWII statehood and Soviet

communism. As a result students will learn basic facts from history and politics of the

Baltic states, their institutional setting, will be able to analyze the contemporary conflicts

dividing them. They will also be trained to collect a detailed information on politics and

economy of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia as well as setting it in the proper historical, cultural

and political context.
