Russia and the Baltic States [SSM 535.1]

This lecture series is intended to give students an understanding of the regional

developments in the Baltic Sea area, particularly focusing on Russia and the Baltic

countries. The first section of the course concentrates on the internal and external factors

that shape Russian foreign policy, in general, and in the region, in particular. Such

aspects as energy security, political interaction and minority issues, especially in the

bilateral relations between Russia and the Baltic states, will be discussed. Second section

of the course focuses on similarities and differences of the Baltic States and their

integration into European structures. The prospective developments in and evolution of

the Baltic Sea area or Europe’s Northern region will also be analyzed.
